Preserving an American Architectural Treasure
The New Orleans Lakefront Airport is more than an aviation facility — it is a cultural landmark that embodies the artistic ambition and civic pride of 1930s America. As one of only five surviving Art Deco air terminals in the United States, its preservation is a responsibility shared by the entire community.
Friends of New Orleans Lakefront Airport (FONOLA) coordinates a range of community-driven preservation projects designed to protect and restore the terminal building, its artwork, and its grounds. These initiatives bring together professional conservators, dedicated volunteers, and generous donors in a collaborative effort to safeguard this irreplaceable piece of American heritage.
Current Priorities
The most pressing preservation need at Lakefront Airport is the restoration of seven historic murals painted by Xavier Gonzalez in 1938. These extraordinary works of art were hidden behind false walls for decades before being rediscovered during the terminal's post-Hurricane Katrina restoration. Professional conservators have confirmed that full restoration is feasible, and FONOLA is actively raising funds to make this vision a reality.
The Fountain of the Four Winds, a monumental sculpture created by Enrique Alférez in 1937, represents another major restoration opportunity. Nearly nine decades of exposure to southern Louisiana's climate have taken their toll on this masterwork, and careful conservation work is needed to preserve its sculptural detail for future generations.
